First local community participation museum launched

Shanghai’s first community participation museum was launched in Changning District recently. The museum in Hongqiao Airport New Village started trial operation during the Spring Festival.

Residents can not only visit the museum to understand the development story of the community, but also participate in activities such as community documentary preview and painting sessions so as to experience aviation culture and gain a sense of belonging and happiness from participating in community governance.

The entire two-story building has created the layout of an airport terminal. The ground is also painted with runway and aircraft patterns while window display panels showcase at least 25 kinds of airport people images.

An exhibition showcasing old photos and objects provided by local residents was held during the trial run, which has since ended, to demonstrate community events and explore the unique cultural heritage of the community.

In addition to various displays of past memories, the museum also features an interactive co-creation space where residents can participate in making handicrafts to show their ideas for the future of their homes.

Even after the museum opens officially – most likely in March – residents, whose opinions are being sought to improve its service, will be able to participate in the museum’s daily operation as volunteers or curators.
